Canberra Irish Set Dance Weekend Workshop 2008

The Canberra Irish Set Dance Weekend workshop is now over for another year.  Thanks to everyone who supported this event through teaching, calling, demonstrating, playing music, turning up and working behind the scenes.  It was a great success and everyone had a great time.  A report will be posted on the weekend workshop page of our website when it is ready.

Best wishes, Kate and Paul

Old site

Hi and welcome to the website for the Canberra Irish Set Dance Weekend.
Now in its fourth year this weekend workshop is an ideal venue for learning Irish set dancing for the first time, improving your set dancing, learning new dances or just dancing and socialising in a great atmosphere.  One of our main objectives is learning from a range of teachers - particularly those that have travelled to Ireland to learn from teachers there - and this year we welcome   Margaret and Bill Winnett from Sydney and Arthur Kingsland from Newcastle.  In addition, you will have the opportunity to have a go at sean nos dancing with Kevin Hassett from Ireland and he will also be displaying this form of dance at the Saturday night ceili.

If you want to find out more about this event, check this website regularly as we will be posting details as they come to hand.  Alternatively please contact us on 02 6251 5257 (H) (+61 2 6251 5257 for international callers) or 0422 392 081 (M) (+61 422 392 081 for international callers) or via email at paulway@mabula.net if you need further information about the weekend.

Finally, in addition to the weekend we run classes on Wednesday nights in Canberra.  If you would like to come to a class on a regular or casual basis full details are available here.

Please note!  There have been some small changes to the program - Arthur Kingsland has replaced the injured Ina Bertrand, the Friday welcome ceili is now finishing at 10.30 pm, a sean nos class has been added to the Saturday program and Saturday classes are now finishing at 4 pm.  The cost for the Sunday class and ceili has been reduced to $14.00.

About Canberra and accommodation

For information about travel to, getting around and accommodation in Canberra, see the National Capital Tourism website. They have comprehensive details on everything from all types of accommodation to what's going on in Canberra to where to eat out.

There is a range of accommodation within ten to fifteen minutes walk of the venue. One of the closest is the flashy Waldorf Canberra, but for those of more modest budgets the nearby Canberra Youth Hostel has rooms and dorms. Other hotels and apartments nearby include the Olims Hotel, Quest Apartments, Rydges, Novotel, Medina Executive James Court, Comfort Inn Downtown, and the Canberra Rex Hotel.  A good budget option in a bushland setting is the Canberra Motor Village but you will need a car or plenty of time for buses.

We acknowledge the support of the Monaro Folk Society in the staging of this event.
