41 - Toast "Tech" Night 2007-05-01

I’d been playing every Tuesday night at the Toast nightclub with a bunch of other like-minded people in a series of ‘Tech’ nights that I’d been quite enjoying. It was interesting to go there and mix up something new each time, listen to the other guys play, and generally relax and get out a bit.

But I’d gradually been feeling like I didn’t really fit in – or, more precisely, like the guy who was organising things had a specific idea about what he wanted to hear and it wasn’t what I was playing. To be more precise I’d say that it was what he was playing. And gradually all the other people that had been turning up and been interested in what was being played stopped turning up, and the next thing I knew I was being cut short so that he could spend more time playing the music he loved.

I took the hint. I enjoyed playing there, but if it all depends on one person’s opinion then that’s fine. I have my own opinion and I go down a different path – occasionally other people’s tastes align with mine. And while I enjoy playing at a venue the Tuesday night crowd was small – basically only the people who already knew about it – and it’s not as if my mixing style is suited to live performance.
