This Longford set was composed by Mairead Casey, Michelle Casey, Johnnie and Maura Duffy, Theresa Walsh, Siobahn Casey, Deirdre Farrell and Maura Kenny. The name “Laniuish” comes from “Oileain Uisce – Island of the Water”, and takes its name from an area close to Lough Ree, a lake on the river Shannon, in Newtowncashel. Local folklore tells that in the area of Laniuish, swamp people (lacht na lathi) came out at night to dance in circles, hence the circles in the set. Waves and arches are symbolic of the water and bridges of the Shannon.
